English at Boutcher C.E. Primary School

At Boutcher C.E. Primary School, our aim is to develop confident, independent readers and writers who excel academically and cultivate a lifelong love of language and literature.

Reading Curriculum
Reading is central to our English curriculum, with high-quality texts forming the foundation of our teaching. We focus on making reading enjoyable and meaningful, helping children become fluent, reflective readers who engage deeply with a wide variety of texts.

Aims:

  • To help children read with fluency, accuracy, and understanding.

  • To foster a love of reading through engaging and challenging texts.

  • To encourage independent and enthusiastic readers, developing comprehension skills through both guided and independent reading.

Writing Curriculum
Writing is a powerful tool for self-expression and critical thinking. Our writing curriculum is designed to be purposeful, engaging, and enjoyable, allowing children to develop their skills in a creative and meaningful way.

Aims:

  • To give children real reasons to write, whether to inform, persuade, or explain.

  • To help children develop stamina and accuracy in writing, with a focus on grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • To promote the editing process, allowing children to improve their writing.

In Reception and Year 1, we place a strong emphasis on phonics and handwriting. This ensures children build a solid foundation in letter recognition, sound blending, and early writing skills.

Curriculum Structure
Our English curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is enriched by The Literary Curriculum, which provides a carefully selected range of texts across both key stages. These texts are chosen to engage, inspire, and challenge children, featuring a diverse array of genres and authors. Whenever possible, they are also linked to other areas of the curriculum to enhance broader learning.
