Mathematics at Boutcher

At Boutcher we aim to develop confident, fluent mathematicians through a mastery approach built on the principles of the Maths - No Problem! scheme. We teach children to see mathematics as a connected and creative subject, where concepts are explored in depth, ideas build logically, and understanding grows through discussion, reasoning and practice.

We encourage children to explain their thinking, use mathematical language with precision, and apply their understanding to a range of problems. Through varied representations and practical experiences, we help them make links between concrete, pictorial and abstract ideas so that learning is secure and lasting.

We support children in developing fluency and recall through daily retrieval practice, enabling them to strengthen prior knowledge and build confidence over time.

We purposefully provide a relevant and inclusive curriculum from the Early Years onwards, ensuring that children experience success, approach challenge with curiosity and resilience, and recognises how mathematics connects to life beyond the classroom.

Numbots and TTRS enable children to develop their fluency with number. Those who dedicate time to learning their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts notice that they find maths lessons considerably easier because they do not need to commit so much mental energy to calculating – or working things out – as they simply ‘know’ answers without thinking.
