A team of eight people will be living in Antarctica for five months as they work together to restore a British base that was first built in 1944. Read the article linked below, then answer the following question:
If you were offered an exciting job in Antarctica but had to leave your family for five months, would you take it? Why or why not? What do you think would be the best and most challenging parts of the experience?
Sinead (Year 6)
Yes, I would because firstly here is a list of reasons:
Advantages:
1. Penguins are my favourite animals and seeing them for five months would be brilliant.
2. Most people say no because they don't want to be split from family, but it helps with independence and makes the times you took for granted before with your family much more special.
3. The payment should be quite good
4. It means that you would be able to thrive in harsh conditions making you stronger.
5. You could go skiing all the time.
6. It would be fun and it can expand your knowledge.
7. It is good to explore new places.
Disadvantages:
1. Food is scarce and you'll probably have to live on fish for 5 months.
2. You will miss your family and wish to see them.
3. (adding to number 2) It is not easy to communicate; there is probably NO wifi or post offices.
4. Frostbite is common
5.Not a very civilized place to live in.
Ben (Year 4)
Yes, I would accept the exciting job offer to work in Antarctica. I would have to leave my family for five months, but the opportunity to discover something new in human history would make it worthwhile.
I could help to fix up the historic base on Goudier Island and study at the scientific research station.
I would be excited to learn first aid, take sea survival and penguinology courses before I went there. I would really want to see Gentoo penguins and other marine creatures.
It would be interesting to record climate change and see how the ice is changing in Antarctica.
The hardest part would be the extremely cold weather, living in basic conditions and missing my
