May 8th 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of "Victory in Europe Day" – when the fighting in Europe against Nazi Germany ended.
Why do you think many people choose to remember VE Day 80 years on? Will you be doing anything that you know of to commemorate this day?
VE day, which stands for victory in Europe, happened 80 years ago. VE day is when the Germans surrendered and ended the war in Europe. On this day, the bells were ringing and everyone was celebrating that the war had ended and they were safe again. I believe that if you want to celebrate VE day you should have the opportunity to celebrate and I will celebrate the day because it’s a very important day for the people who lived through the war. For me my granny, who has sadly passed away, lived on VE day when she was 18 so she had a very harsh memory of the war. She always had stories of the war and I have a lot of memories of the war from her. I believe that the VE day should be celebrated for as long as you want to, but for me I will celebrate it as long as I can because it is so important for the people who have gone through the war.
Charlotte (Year 5)
People choose to remember VE DAY because we wouldn't be living if it didn't happen and it shows how grateful we are that soldiers died in the war and fought for us. A lot of children were moved to the country side and people were suffering, but when the war in Europe was over people were having a great, big party and getting back with their family.
