KS2 Homework Comment of the Week

Congratulations to Freya in Year 4 and Juan Francisco in Year 6 for your comment of the week!

Yes every parent has the right to name their child whatever like as long as it isn’t something that could make them embarrassed when they are older. Every name has a different meaning and it’s nice for the parent to be able to pick something that means something to them and their family.

(Freya, Year 4)

I think that parents should be able to name their child as they wish because it is their child and the government should not be able to intervene in this personal choice unless the name is offensive or rude. Unique names are interesting and a talking point and might be very “normal” in other countries. For example, my names are traditional in Spain and Juan is the name of my Dad, my Uncle and my Great Grandfathers. Francisco is the name of my other Uncle and my Grandfather so it is a special name to us but sounds a bit unusual in London. I think the same is true for other kids in the class.
However, parents should take care when choosing a name because certain names chosen after celebrities etc can sound silly and could affect a child later in life if they are doing a serious job or something. However, if it means something and is special then it is a free choice. It would be boring if there was a list of approved names.

(Juan Francisco, Year 6)
